Knowing Your Numbers: Four

In my Knowing Your Numbers series, those who are new to numerology get to see how spiritual numbers work and manifest in our world; those who are familiar with numerology will get a nice refresher, with extras! In this post, we’ll be going over the number four.

Fours consistently represent foundations, balance, and stability. In Numerology, they’re also traditionally the energy of work and labor, reliability, sobriety, protection, guardianship and physicality. Your hardest workers are likely to be people with a lot of 4 energy. However - and this deviates somewhat from Western convention - I invite you to consider that 4 is the last of the 4 creative cardinal energies before you start really mixing and building things up. Once you move into 5 energy, you’re really just building upon the foundation that energies 1 through 4 have laid down. 4 is the finisher that ensures that you’re ready before being thrust out into the cosmos once more. For this reason, people who bear 4 energy can make excellent teachers, professors, and sages. Sometimes unwittingly.

When 4 is in an aggravated or adverse state, it brings blockage, brittleness, and hardheartedness. 4 energy stabilizes, and thus naturally resists too much change to what it builds and establishes. Aggravated 4 energy can become a powerful adversary to progress when not being balanced out by other numbers. This is especially so when it ignores or tries to eradicate the inevitability of 5: change. For this reason, bearers of 4 energy may find that the more they attempt to forestall change, the stronger their opposition becomes and the faster Spirit works to relax their grip. They must challenge themselves by finding new ways to relax, or they will be taught until they do.

Manifestations in Numerology

Life Path: Folks with an LP-4 can be stubborn do-gooders, but once they loosen up, their destiny to build or teach becomes that much easier to achieve. They are architects, sometimes physical, sometimes spiritual. But make no mistake: they're here to put in work, and come with whatever they need to get that work started. What on, however, depends on other determining factors. Those who have 4 as their Life Path will build things that withstand the test of time, and the fruits of their labor are often enjoyed across generations. They can also serve as the world’s historians and ethicists, preserving and enforcing the rules that allow us to thrive in harmony.

Expression: People with an Expression Number of 4 tend to have fantastic stamina and an excellent constitution. It is often important for them to have their hands in something: a new project, a business, a lesson plan. They can lean on their ability to create and test their concepts, especially in their mind’s eye. They’re capable of learning with an exceptional quickness and are just as prompt in applying the knowledge that they acquire. Bearers of 4 as an Expression Number can achieve their destiny through literally building a way to its expression.

Personality: people tend to interpret folks with a Personality Number 4 as salt-of-the-earth, serious, and solemn. With good reason: the 4 energy keeps them strong, and that’s sometimes all that others may see. Fours are also good for a deadpanned joke or, when they feel threatened, stonewalling others away. They can intimidate with their anger, especially if they give in to the urge to bury it all...which is why folks with a lot of 4 energy are wise to mind their recalcitrance in the face of the unexpected. More positively, they are seen as trustworthy, fair-minded, reliable, and secure. People often turn to them for stability or to help make sense of things, especially in times of loss or chaos.

Birthday: barring other factors (such as inter-generational trauma), people born into 4 energy are often hardy and strongly fortified in spirit. They may struggle with connecting to spiritual forces or truly feeling spiritual movement, but this can be remedied with time, effort, persistence. 4 energy all but assures that if they put the work in, they will be well-rewarded.

Things to Take Advantage Of

Excellent longevity and health (barring ancestral factors which can impact even folks with 4 energy), an innate gift for defense, protection, and provision. Whether metaphorically-speakingg or actually tilling the earth, 4 folks are skilled farmers. 4 energy is also conducive to long-term investments, commitments and partnerships: if a 4 person uses their innate shrewdness, those three things will enhance their lives in ways immeasurable. Due to their predisposition towards analysis and practicality, they’re essential members of any team or community endeavor, and should learn from the people around them how to be in those groups without shutting down, running off to go it alone or taking on others’ duties. Also, because 4 folks have a strong sense of ethics, justice and morality, they would be wise to shake all fears of change and capital-D Difference, then participate in the reconstruction and revision of old values and social/cultural/political norms. In its highest possible expression (alongside Master Number 22), 4 energy is the architect of reality, establishing and locking in the rules for how it works/flows.

Things to Be Mindful Of:

Authoritarianism and conservatism to a fault, rigidity, a stubborn refusal to make room for change or the unknown. 4, like 2 energy, can block and block out, especially when it comes to emotions that threaten the image that they may have of themselves, or emotions/thoughts/realizations that would require them to break their code and rock the boat. In an aggravated expression, 4 likes keeping things as they even to the point of being self-destructive, and its bearers may avoid replacing things until they’re absolutely broken down beyond repair. They should be beware of disconnecting themselves entirely from a state of flow due to rigid ideas about how the world works, and be vigilant about releasing their need for control - they may not be as direct or domineering as a 1 may be, but in an adverse state that 4 will encourage a very tightly-clenched iron fist. 4 people also run the risk of being so practical or “reality-based” that they shut others down, get stuck in their ways to the point of detriment, or become mired in their own negativity, pessimism, or cynicism. On the plus side, if there’s anyone who knows how to strategize on an exit plan out of muck, it is folks with 4 energy. Finally, people with an ample amount of 4 energy may be more susceptible than others to issues with digestive issues, constipation, and water retention.
