How-To: Building a Rapid-Prep Spiritual Spray

If you’re visiting the Matrix, chances are high that you know what a spiritual spray is. But in the event that you’re new to this sort of spiritual tool:

a spiritual spray is a liquid ritually prepared, usually with various herbs and liquors, to have a specific spiritual effect.

One of the more common spiritual sprays is made by combining Florida Water cologne with water, although some may spray it directly; if I recall correctly, Lanman and Murray actually sells an aerosol. A company called Zum sells something called an “aura spray,” made with essential oils. Many practitioners in African Traditional and Diasporic systems prefer to make their own spiritual sprays. What I will teach you is a general rapid-prep formula, and strategy, that you can build upon as part of your spiritual hygiene regimen.

Step One: Strengthening your “What” by Knowing Your “Why”

Unless you’re experimenting/practicing or experienced with stacking multiple effects, it’s useful to focus on one intention per batch. Learn how things manifest for you after you’ve set a thing in motion! These are some of the things a spiritual spray is usually prepared to accomplish:

  • cutting and clearing away unwanted attachments, psychic cords, and thoughtforms

  • banishing unwelcome spirits, entities and ancestors

  • banebreaking (breaking hexes and other magical works)

  • boosting spiritual and psychic clarity

  • removing evil eye and bad vibrations

  • drawing in good luck, prosperity, and business

  • general cleansing

  • drawing in the right lovers and romantic prospects

Once you’ve decided on what this batch of spray is for, go ahead and proceed to step two!

Step Two: Gathering and Preparing Your Materials

I can’t say that this is the most important step - each one is critical, especially if you’re making sprays for others - but it does require your care. Every ingredient has its distinct properties and synergy with other ingredients with the spray. Mixed intentions - or herbs with bad synergy - can lead to a disharmonious effect.

For the purposes of this how-to, I’ll walk you through making a relatively-accessible prosperity-drawing spray. To prepare it hot, you’ll need:

  • a spray bottle

  • a resealable heat-resistant jar (usually a mason jar)

  • ice cube tray (highly recommended but not required)

  • high-proof or overproof liquor (a dollar bottle of vodka works wonders)

  • a fistful of fresh parsley OR dried parsley

  • Salt

  • Sugar (optional)

  • A bowl (recommended)

  • A pot

If you have none of the ingredients, this recipe will cost you under $10 to make if you get everything from a dollar store. If you can swing pricier ingredients and expand the herbs chosen, cool. I chose parsley because it’s a versatile prosperity herb that plays nicely with salt and sugar alike. Folks with experience in working with herbs can stack parsley’s prosperity-drawing effects with an herb like lemongrass (wards off bad luck), angelica (helps you keep what you receive), or marshmallow root (helps you keep what you receive).

If you cannot get ahold of liquor, that’s okay: just decant what you need into your spray bottle and freeze the rest.

Once you’re ready to combine and charge your herbs, proceed to step three. I recommend taking a spiritual bath first!

Step Three: Combining and Charging

Get all your materials together in one place. If you have the time and resources, shift the energy of your workspace (via incense, prayer, etc.).

Get your water and pour it into the vessel you’re using to mix the ingredients. Add a pinch of salt and pray for what you want into the water.

Next, grab a pinch of sugar - a literal pinch, not enough to truly sweeten. Pray into this for the prosperity that’s rightfully yours to reach you and stay with you. Add it to the water, and stir. Imagine good things happening to you - they are yours.

Then, grab your parsley. If you’re using dried parsley, add a little more than you think you need. Pray for what you want into the parsley, then stir it into the water with your hands.

Once everything’s combined, stir and pray again. As you stir, imagine the mixture becoming more alive, more effective. Stop when ready.

Step Four: Let it Marinate

This step can be accomplished one of two ways: hot or cold.

If brewing hot: pour your spray batch into a pot and get it to a rolling boil. Then immediately cover it and drop it to a very low simmer for about 20 minutes. At this point, you can pray into your liquor if you obtained some and set it aside. You’ll add it once the spray mixture cools. After 20 minutes, remove the pot from heat and allow it to cool. Don’t add your liquor until after the mixture has hit room temperature.

If brewing cold: pray into your liquor if you obtained it, add it to your spray batch, and pour the entirety of it into a resealable jar. Shake it before placing it in the fridge for at least 6 hours.

Step Five: Filtering, Usage and Storage

Once your spray batch is ready, strain some liquid out and decant it into your spray bottle. You’re ready to use your spray! Spray it around yourself and on your arms for a few days; observe any substantial changes to your experience.

As for the rest of the spray mix: you have a few ways to deal with it.

If freezing: pour into an ice cube tray and store in your freezer for future use. I highly recommend this if you’ve made more than 8oz of spray mix. Don’t strain the herbs out!

If using as-is: store the jar of spray mix in your fridge - the herbs you use may have a shelf life of only a few days once brewed. It is possible to prolong the shelf life of your spray with alcohol.

Quick Q+A

There are no measurements. How come?

Flexibility’s sake. This formula is designed to work to-scale. Only have a 4oz mason jar to store your spray in and a 2oz spray bottle for immediate use? Cool, pour 5oz of water into your pot and get to work. Have confidence in your work and want to prepare for a season? Great! Check your ice cube trays to see how much they can store.

Don’t most sprays use way more alcohol?

Yep - and they also take more time, too. If you have the time both spiritually and circumstantially, you can prepare a spiritual spray the traditional way (herbs, roots, alcohol, etc.). I’ve found that a lot of lay people need something that can be made in a pinch, and aren’t in the position to prepare in advance for spiritual changes to their lot. At least, not like practitioners.

Can’t you make one with just alcohol, water, and essential oils?

Yes, and there are a bunch of sprays on the market that boil down to that specific formula. However, they don’t come charged if not prepped by a spiritual practitioner, and you’d have to give them the juice to make them work. I’ve found that charging each ingredient can make a huge difference in the overall quality and reach of a spray.

If you’d like to work with something premade, pray into a small amount and test-drive it. If the results aren’t what you expect, toy around with it until it does.

So there you have it! The means to make your own spiritual spray whenever you might need one. If you follow the formula outlined above and give it a try, let me know how it works for you!
