An Introduction to Housing Numerology

Introduction

I was recently asked if there was any value to assessing the numerological value of a property. My answer is, and always will be: absolutely. Because numbers represent frequencies, they can accurately relay information about those of the land being considered. Even countries have a numerological value, which influences everything from culture to trade to international diplomacy!

When developers divide properties and number them, they are imbuing each piece of land with that specific numerological energy; the physical house numbers just seal the deal. And when the numerological signature of the street is taken into account, a discerning homeowner or renter can get a decent view of the kinds of energies that move within the property. Knowing the signature helps you understand which activities/dynamics are favored, which are undesirable, etc. Some may even want to get the numerological signature of the city, state, or zip code that they live in for that reason. Knowledge of a house’s number can also help you understand how to manage time and space while you’re on it: even-number properties can slow down your perception of time, while odd-number properties will hasten it. Whether this is a good thing for you depends on whether the house energy is in a beneficial or adverse state.

Obtaining Numerological Signatures

There are many ways to obtain the “signature” of a property. My recommended method, while a little time-consuming, is considering the sum of the following expression numbers: country, state/province, city, street, house number. This is because your house does not exist in a bubble, and is influenced heavily by those other energies. While you might feel the energies of the house number in isolation, the undercurrent will often be a completely different number. Knowledge of the true property number can help you discern what kinds of actions to take to improve your home, as well as how fruitful they will be.

Let’s do a sample calculation using a real location, but an imaginary street.

Say you’re looking to rent a room in a house in Dumbo, a New York City neighborhood. The house is located at 140 Jade Street, zip code 11201. So the full address breakdown looks like this:

140 Jade Street, Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York, NY, US 11201.

WHEW, right? That’s a lot to consider. Using the below formula, calculate the expression number for each segment. New York City has boroughs in addition to neighborhoods, so I’ll be including it below. You can also expand the formula to include an apartment number, if needed.

House Number + Street Name + Neighborhood + Borough + City + State + Country* + Zip Code

(5) + (8) + (1) + (4) + (3) + (3) + (5) + (5) = 34

Looks like your house on Jade Street has the numerological signature of 7. As a “bubble,” you can expect that the dynamics that you’ll have with your housemates will take on the characteristics of 4: you may not be bosom buddies, but you’ll likely work as a team (or highly-organized unit) to get household tasks done. If there’s trouble that can’t be overcome by teamwork, however? Everyone will end up doing their own thing, keeping to themselves and pursuing their own visions instead of investing in the collective. It would be an excellent home for artists, creatives, and philosophers looking for the right environment in which to cultivate their projects. When everyone’s on the same page in a 4 house, the entire house benefits immensely.

Housing By the Numbers

Let’s take a look at how numerological energies manifest in our homes.

Housing Number 1

Pros: most likely to have access to a lot of sunlight and can “feel” bright even if sunlight is limited on the property; inspires a “can-do” attitude, pioneership, and forward motion. A good starter property for those who aren’t used to doing things on their own; 1 energy helps get people up in the morning, and inspires them to try new things. When sharing it with others, this house will help each individual cultivate self-direction, though there’s usually a “leader” who emerges here.

Cons: you probably won’t see the changes to and within this house coming. Unexpected repairs are common. When working with contractors or (where applicable) the landlord, there can be a tendency towards either/all parties asserting they “know” what to do and blustering ahead. Where one person is the “head” of household, whether formally or informally, they may have a bad habit of just making changes without checking in with everyone else. Make it a priority to share ideas in this house, and always ask for help/delegate to ensure that all flows well.

Housing Number 2

Pros: any spiritual work with water on this property is highly favored. A house with this as its number is perfect for those looking to attune to their sensual, spiritual side. When living with others, this house helps foster growth, partnership, even love. A very good house for folks in relationships, those looking to have children, and those with an interest in cultivating a truly “magical” home. 2 houses can bring balance where it’s sorely needed, and can help you slow down if you’re in the fast lane in other areas of your life. Because it’s a house of growth, ask what you want to cultivate here.

Cons: while 2 houses can be safe havens for criminals, this is often temporary: in a 2 house, crime is always revealed, thieves are often punished, etc. 2 presides over emotions, making it absolute hell on your mental health when the energy of a 2 house is in an aggravated state. Talking to people who have lived in aggravated 2 houses, there’s been a consistent report of there always being some sort of drama going on. Make an effort to routinely cleanse this space, allow fresh air to circulate, and consider keeping flowers inside the house (especially after an argument!). Watch out for snakes, especially if you’re in an area where snakes are active. Don’t hurt them, though: where 2s are concerned, it’s their home, too.

Housing Number 3

Pros: 3 loves company! This is a great house where you can make strong connections with the people that you live with, and where there’s lots of laughter, fun, and connectivity. A 3 house is great for folks who are looking to come out of their shells but don’t know how. This is the house where your friends and other guests will feel just as welcome, making it ideal for social gatherings, “think tank” meetings, and extended families. 3 homes are extremely child-friendly, and are easy on your inner child, too. There’s rarely a dull moment in a 3 house, so move on in if you want your home space to be active and struggle with boredom.

Cons: when the house energy is funky, folks in a 3 house will act “funny,” turning to immature behavior, jokes that aren’t really jokes, and temper tantrums. There may be a tendency to avoid taking responsibility for household chores. It can also be “all play, absolutely zero work” when the house energy’s out of balance. When the house energy is really off, people tend to treat personal accountability like a game of dodgeball: they might dish it, but won’t be able to handle that same energy being thrown back at them. This is one of the tricky houses where numeric remediation is highly recommended. Also, folks might be really inclined towards infidelity when the housing energy is out of whack. Remember…3 loves it some company.

Housing Number 4

Pros: this is the house that probably has the best organic spiritual security on the block. 4 houses foster security, stability, and loyalty. This is the home that most easily gives way to a great garden, can withstand a storm, and which thieves are more than likely to pass on rather than enter. When living with others, 4 houses encourage teamwork: any house project undertaken as a group will have an awesome payoff for everyone involved. It’s also an ideal house for the minimalist, or someone who values function over form: the energy supports conservation, utility, and simplicity over all. 4 houses can be work, but that’s okay! Especially if you fill it with healthy, happy, plants, you’ll be inspired to do your best while you’re there.

Cons: this house can foster stubbornness. While 4 houses tend to support improvements and invention, they’ll become resistant to change (like its inhabitants) if the energy tilts into an aggravated state. This will make everything seem harder to achieve. There may be consistent difficulty with adding additions or expansions that radically change how the house “flows.” When multiple people live in a house where the 4 energy is in an aggravated state, there may be a tendency for everyone to take a “my way or the highway” approach to house dynamics. There can be an tendency towards stonewalling, and blockages may seem hard to crack when the energy is off. This is one of those houses where house meetings or other forms of local bonding are best conducted over drinks, alcoholic or otherwise: the liquid helps “loosen” tension.

Housing Number 5

Pros: like with 3 houses, this house can be a party house. 5 fosters connection, passion, and creativity. This is the home of cooking experiments going right, passionate love matches (and affairs), and getting one’s groove back. The latter is especially true if you’ve been recovering from a long-term illness. This is a great house for someone who wants their homespace to feel warm, inviting, and deeply pleasing to the senses. Love or casual connections with housemates can be…erm, highly likely. Even if sparks don’t fly in that way, it’s a spectacular house for making friends, as it becomes a cauldron of camaraderie at its best. Expect explosive and unexpected spurts of growth in 5 houses, especially when gardening. Consider keeping a basil plant or two indoors and see what happens with it.

Cons: you’re more likely to catch a contagious condition here, especially if it’s airborne or transmissible by sexual contact. In an aggravated state, this is the place where you just might bust the windows out someone’s car (or carve your name into someone’s leather seats). 5 energy loves drama, so efforts to make sure that it doesn’t tip over into that pay off really well. When living with others and the house energy is off, 5 energy exacerbates gossip, arguments, competition, violence, and backbiting. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the most successful reality TV shows were filmed at least in part in a 5 house. This is another house where numeric remediation should be considered seriously when the energy is chronically out of balance: 5’s instability proceeds to wash over everything and everyone, making evictions (or just being put out) more likely if unaddressed.

Housing Number 6

Pros: if you’re looking to make your home a castle, a 6 home will support you in your endeavors. While not as opulent or posh as an 8, 6 favors simple elegance. If you’ve got an impulse towards nesting or have a child on the way, you’ll probably be attracted to a 6 property. This house, like the 4 house, makes you feel safe - but not just safe, comfortable. 6 houses are primal in the sense that they’ll soothe the aspect of you that needs security, thus opening the way for you to heal (if needed) and seek fulfilment in more abstract areas. When living with others, this house will foster intimacy and closeness; even if one housemate moves out, you might find that everyone’s rather tight-knit, and may keep in touch after they leave. An excellent home for those who want to turn their homes into sanctuaries of healing and familial love. This property is great for raising young children, and they’ll always want to come home to it even as they get older.

Cons: when this energy is aggravated, 6 houses can feel restricted. This is also the house where you’ll need to cultivate self-awareness about how you participate in group dynamics, especially families. If you have substantial baggage around this, a 6 house can help you if you choose to work through it. Otherwise, you might find yourself repeating the dynamics of your family home, no matter what the signature of your family home actually was. There can also unfortunately be a tendency for folks’ inner control freak to come right on out in 6 houses when things are funky. The energy may encourage pettiness, nitpicking, and undue scrutiny, in addition to “in-group/out-group” drama as people try to assess who’s “one of them” and who isn’t. Again…in a 6 house, self-awareness is essential.

Housing Number 7

Pros: this is the house where the money not just resides, but runs in. Provided they’re smart about investments (of any kind), people in 7 houses will find native support in amassing multiple forms of wealth. The 7 energy will foster expansion, and heavily rewards those with a hunger for learning and spiritual development. When shared with others, a 7 house will allow folks to work together without stepping on each other’s toes, and it’s ideal for those who value privacy. It’s also a dream house number for creatives, sometimes literally: the property may have a higher occurrence of spiritual phenomena, including vivid dreams. 7 houses can raise up prophets, psychics and gifted philosophers.

Cons: 7 energy can encourage some truly nasty conditions when the energy is tipped or held in an aggravated state. It can feed and exacerbate cynicism, delusions and illusions, bitterness, conspiracies (real or imagined), and theft. When shared with others, 7 houses that are out of balance can lead to folks being all up in your business or crossing boundaries, or even just icing you out as it becomes “every person for themselves.” 7 energy, like 1 energy, can also foster arrogance, but with an extra helping of navel-gazing. This is one of the house numbers where spiritual action makes a world of a difference, and where incoming curse or hex-work must be addressed immediately to avoid it getting worse. Spiritual and magical workings on a 7 property are enhanced…for good or ill.

Housing Number 8

Pros: This is the house of lessons. 8 houses are where you get a chance to synchronize all that you’ve learned from past experiences, as well as reap just rewards for all of your hard work. They favor elegance and extravagance, so if you’re looking to make your house feel like the set of a movie? 8 houses are for you. They can, of course, support the more simple and minimalist among us - just understand that even if you don’t intend for it to feel expensive and tasteful, it probably will be. When shared with others, 8 houses will help you share with each other, achieve compromise, and encourage a balanced sense of give-and-take. If you’re someone who like to take their time with things, the 8 energy of this house has your back.

8 houses are also a little weird in that they’re more magnetic than other houses. This is because 8 as a numerological expression is powerfully spiritual, to the point where 8 houses become what I consider “karmic:” the property tends to create a bubble in which you make big leaps in spiritual growth, and then gently urges you on once your lessons are done.

Cons: …This is the house of lessons. Like with all even-number houses, 8 houses can feel like a trap - especially if you haven’t mastered whatever lessons you need to master in order to move forward with your life’s work. When shared with others, 8 houses tend to attract people who all need to learn the same lesson; whatever you’re dealing with, your housemates will also have similar stories to tell. When the energy’s in an aggravated state, 8 houses also feed power struggles, and it can feel like there’s perpetual drama or challenge until the house is back in a balanced state. Or, you move. Whichever comes first. Remember, 8 houses will literally nudge you out when you’ve learned your lesson. Make sure that you don’t resist, lest the 8 has you feeling constricted. Spiritual development and maturity become keys that loosen things up and open the way.

Also, because 8 has much to do with cosmic debt and the laws of reciprocity and return, please keep in mind that what you give will come back manifold in an 8 house. This can be a blessing or a curse depending on how you conduct yourself and the spirit in which you make your choices. If you bless others while in an 8 house, you will find blessings; if you curse them, you’ll confront that energy more quickly than anywhere else.

Housing Number 9

Pros: 9 houses like to stay in families, whether that family is ancestral or spiritual. If you’re looking for a house that you can leave to future generations, a 9 house is most likely to support you in making that happen. While 9 can be transient and tends to represent changing tides, remember that 9 is a legacy-maker and generates inheritances. 9 houses are also where ancestral influence is most strongly felt, as the property can become like a portal for those in the beyond. Many a medium has been brought up in a 9 house, or thrives while living in a house with that energy. When shared with others, this house will encourage transformation through your relationships to them. You will learn from your housemates, and they from you - even if unintentionally.

Cons: 9 houses can be painful to live in when the energy is in an aggravated state. They’re also most likely to become haunted when the energy remains unbalanced, as the literal and figurative ghosts of past pains will rack up and become hard to ignore. Paranormal activity tips into the unpleasant: nightmares, poltergeists, and hauntings are more likely when a 9 house isn’t a happy one. This house almost requires numeric remediation when changing hands, and it is critical to assess a 9 house for material and spiritual fit before purchasing it or moving in. When shared with others, a 9 house that’s out-of-whack can bring about the experience of death (literal or figurative), unconsummated good fortune, failure, and overwhelming negativity or pessimism. Where its inhabitants are fearful, a 9 house with aggravated energy will prolong illness.

Master-Numbered Houses

AKA Cosmically-Charged Houses

“Cosmically-charged” houses are houses in which your occupancy can have you either burning off or accruing a spiritual debt, and in which you will be forced to confront recurring patterns. If intentional in your movements, you can master major lessons in a cosmically-charged house in some pretty big ways - the house will support your process. This occurs most strongly with the following housing numbers: 11, 22, 33, 44, and 8. If you’re looking to catch a break and take it easy in your next home, consciously moving into a “karmic” house is ill-advised. Remember, cosmically-charged houses will nudge you repeatedly towards spiritual growth and enlightenment. If you resist this, they often become rather challenging. They can also be very difficult to hold onto once you’ve mastered whatever it is that you needed to learn, making them poor long-term or legacy housing solutions if you’re starting a family.

However, if you find that you’re in such a house, do not despair! In fact, you can turn your experience into a beautiful opportunity for transformation. Don’t just make spiritual changes or cleanse more often - the property won’t reward you for that. Look up and within, tend to your spirit and that of others, and watch your home life flourish.

Conclusion

This guide is merely introductory. Don’t feel discouraged if you find that you’re struggling with your home, or if you’ve yet to find the right space for you. Further, remember that energy can always be changed; it’s just sometimes more appropriate to walk away from it rather than ram your head against a brick wall. Finally, because there’s nuance to be considered, this guide shouldn’t and cannot be used as a sole determinant in your housing choice. Never dispense with your good sense, and always ask questions in order to cultivate an informed opinion about your home, prospective or otherwise. *On calculating country numbers: there’s some politics to this, especially when you’re calculating the expression number of a country. Do you use the colloquial name of the country, or its official name? It honestly depends on context. On a personal level, I would use the colloquial name (in this case - America, not the United States or USA). When assessing in other matters, I would use the full political name as used on the world’s stage.
